Sports Physical Services For Kids

Cool Springs Internal Medicine & Pediatrics, PLLC

Internal Medicine, Pediatric and Walk-In Clinics located in Franklin, TN & Brentwood, TN.

At Cool Springs & North Franklin Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, we encourage children to live an active and healthy lifestyle. If you’re considering the idea of signing up your child in a sports activity, we are more than glad to perform a physical evaluation so you can be sure that they are in a perfect condition to participate, or become aware of what their physical limitations are.

What Are Sports Physicals?

When your child takes up a new sports activity, his or her coach will ask you to bring them a certification that validates that your kid’s health and physical condition is good enough to perform the required skills of the sport, and that is the sports physical. Has the coach or organization not asked for it? It is still a good idea to check how fit he or she is.

How Can I Prepare My Child for a Sports Physical?

There isn’t a specific guidebook for parents who need to prepare their children for a sports physical in Franklin, Tennessee… but there sure are a few recommendations that you can take into account!

  • Explain to your child that this appointment is a routine medical check-up, and that there’s nothing to be scared of. It’s all about making sure that they’re healthy and in the best condition to perform his or her desired activity.
  • Gather your child’s medical history, which includes any past injuries, surgeries, medications, and any chronic conditions; as well as notes about the family’s medical history.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. This makes the whole process easier for both the child and the doctor.

What To Expect During Your Child’s Sports Physical

Medical History Review

Our trusted pediatrician asks questions about your child’s health and medical history with the intention of identifying any warning signs. This may include information about past illnesses and injuries, medications that your kid is taking (including supplements), etc.

Physical Exam

The doctor will perform an examination in order to assess your child’s health and fitness condition. It typically includes:

  • Weight and height measurements.
  • Checking blood pressure and pulse.
  • A simple vision test.
  • Heart and lung examination using a stethoscope.
  • Musculoskeletal exam, the pediatrician may ask your kid to execute simple exercises like squatting, jumping, etc.
  • A simple neurological exam to evaluate the kid’s coordination and reflexes.
  • A skin check to ensure that there are no infections, unusual moles, rashes, etc.
  • Abdominal check, to identify any signs of pain or abnormalities.

Recommendations and More

Once the check-up is finished and the pediatrician analyzes all the relevant aspects that come up during the exam, he or she will let you know if your kid is in a good condition. If there are any concerns about your kid’s health, the doctor will provide you all the information about tests, treatments and restrictions necessary. As a plus, our healthcare professional will give you tips about hydration, nutrition and injury prevention.
